About the project

Rewrite the Code was initiated by Women in Tech Gothenburg to help drive positive change. We want to help create awareness and offer suggestions and advice to make the tech sector more inclusive. Our ambition is to offer a tool that is co-created for the industry, by the industry itself, with issues that are real and validated by its coworkers.

This toolkit is aimed for several users, for example:

◦ Managers who want to build and nurture inclusive and thriving organizations can get increased awareness of the challenges and opportunities for change, and concrete advice and steps to take.

◦ HR departments get a validation of the problems and potentials to develop HR operations and support management in building prosperous organizations and increase the wellbeing of co-workers.

◦ Co-workers are offered a validated set of challenges – many of them structural – facing the industry as a whole, to present to their managers and HR representatives without taking any individual risks regarding relationships, employment or being personally connected to a problematic situation.

Process

This toolkit is based on the Get Your Voices Heard demands list from 2019 and aims to offer suggestions on how to meet these demands. The demands were clustered into three solution-oriented themes, and a workshop series with a wide representation of employees, managers and students from the tech industry was conducted to validate the problems and create solutions.

The output of the workshops was structured and evaluated, and completed with additional data and input from Unionen and TechSverige in order to set a relevant scope and delimitations. Thereafter we have added relevant surveys, research, and articles as well as best practice examples.

Participants and contributors

The project is driven by a small and dedicated team at Women in Tech Gothenburg, working on a volunteer basis.
The toolkit was co-created in three workshops on the topics with around 100 participants of all genders, with a broad representation of both company size and type, as well as a wide variety of roles, competence and expertise from within the tech industry.

Ethical aspects

We are very mindful of ethical aspects and sincerely wish that this toolkit will have a high quality with attention to integrity, privacy and being safe and inclusive for users. However, we have limited resources and are not experts in all of these fields, so we are grateful for receiving feedback about any thoughts and aspects that we may have missed. Please email us with your reflections and suggestions.

Delimitations

Making the tech sector inclusive for everyone is a huge and complex task and can not be solved by a small group of people only. However, no matter how small a group you may be, you can start somewhere and bring people together to join efforts, share inspiration, hope and build a sense of community.

This is our contribution.
