Community Spotlight: Liina Tumma
Liina Tumma
Our next tech champion in the Community Spotlight series is Liina Tumma, who blends her three core focus areas – language, technology, and design – to actively shape the way humans interact with artificial intelligence (AI). A passionate advocate for diversity, she believes that building great products requires us to consider diverse perspectives, needs, and use cases.
She has been putting these ideas into action as a core member of Women in Tech Gothenburg’s Rewrite the Code team, which partners with companies to build truly inclusive workspaces. Liina believes that technology should always be designed with a clear purpose. The real question we must ask ourselves is not whether a product can be built, but why it should exist in the first place.
Tell us a bit about yourself and your role in tech.
I moved to Sweden to study and have now been living in Gothenburg for 11 years. My background is in Computational Linguistics and Interaction Design, and I’m currently working as an AI conversational designer.
What has helped you stay and grow in tech?
I’ve always followed my inner motivation to merge my core interests: language, technology and design. I believe that to build great products, diverse perspectives and knowledge are essential to creating something meaningful and useful.
What challenges have you faced, and how have you navigated them?
Tech evolves quickly, and for me, it’s important to stay curious and open to new ways of thinking and creating.
What is your connection to Women in Tech Gothenburg (WITGBG), and what drew you to this community?
For the past few years, I’ve been working on the Rewrite the Code project to bring more inclusivity into the Swedish tech industry. The future of technology should not be shaped by only one particular demographic. We need technology to be inclusive and to consider different perspectives, needs and use cases. The WITGBG community helps me continue working towards this vision.
What is your personal philosophy when it comes to tech?
Great technology is built when many perspectives are part of the process.
What role has community played in your journey?
Community gives me extra spark. I always feel inspired and energised after our meetings and conversations. It’s so empowering to see how we’re making real progress together.
What change would you like to see in the tech industry?
I’d like to see the tech industry become a space where diversity is welcomed and celebrated. Where creativity and new ideas have room to emerge. And where we take responsibility for asking why we build something, not only whether we can.
